Personality Matchmaking

Personality Matchmaking

Studying psychology at university taught me firsthand the importance of understanding an individual’s needs and tastes, and business is no different. In order to provide a good service to our clients we need to understand them and their needs. Once we have this understanding we can do what we love doing and what I call personality matchmaking. For those wondering, I don’t run a dating company on the side, rather I try to pair each client with a stylist whose personality will resonate with them. Personality matchmaking is one of the key aspects of the business for me. I truly believe that enabling a great rapport between the stylist and the client will create great results and will ultimately make the client feel good and happy. To find someone that truly understand you especially regarding your hair and beauty is super important, not only for your own confidence but also for your sanity.

Being good at what we do is not only providing a wonderful haircut and colour service, but it's also been able to give that little extra. I like to spend time developing relationships with my clients and learning more about them, it allows me to create suitable matches to give each client the experience they deserve.

Personality is the first point of call when it comes to hair stylists and I take that into consideration from the recruitment process. The first thing I ask my receptionists before interviewing a potential candidate is - what’s their personality like? 99% of the time I am look for something different. Ultimately, we can only teach the hairdresser how to do hair and the craftsmanship behind it. Their personality is a result of their personal journey and life story. Providing the match make is a success, the stylist will give you their heart and their soul. I am so lucky to count such a vast number of hairdressers from my team whose personalities can click with anyone.

Individualism

Individualism

The buzz word for this week is #individualism. Individualism is the ability to adopt individualistic values, recognize your hairdressers for their unique skills rather than rewarding a group. Many salons owners are scared of it. We as an industry are highly dependent on creativity, if we look after our hairdressers as individuals they will be much more creative than if you address them as a collective group. Most people want to be seen as individuals and want to be respected for their individual talents.

This philosophy is prevalent in all aspects of our society, you just need to look: being a single parent, traveling alone or living alone is no longer taboo. An individualistic culture at work promotes creativity and innovation, boosts engagement and motivates people to do their best. Your team will be proud of their accomplishments and will strive to achieve their best knowing that. We have always run our company on individuality. For some of us everything comes at a cost but isn’t it better to create a dynamic skilled hairdresser that leaves you in 5 years’ time than a hairdresser that will follow the flow but stay with you forever. Think like a football coach .. shift your mind .. it’s time to make change.

Redken X BTC Competition

Throughout the month of September Redken hosted a UK Instagram competition with the infamous Behind The Chair social account inviting colourists around the country to share the very best of their colour transformations using the #redkenxbtc.

Seniz Alkan – Colour Director, who began her career 18 years ago when she started working a Neville Hair & Beauty is a huge fan of the Redken products and jumped at the opportunity to enter the competition.

Having trained as a colourist at the salon and having since worked her way up to Colour Director at the salon, Seniz’s experience has enabled her to develop many colour techniques influenced by her work travels around the globe.

Seniz never stops learning and developing colour trends, and she regularly travels to Los Angeles where she has visited top salons including John Barrett, Tracy Cunningham and Ramirez Tran where she met top colourist to the stars Anja Burton 8 years ago.

Anja and Seniz have since worked together on creating a new variation to the classic Ombre/ Balyage, the Ombralayage, which is exclusive to Neville Hair & Beauty.

Ever the innovator, Seniz, who practices from her own ‘Colour Pod’ at the salon, has created trend after trend seen on the likes of London’s top press, including her new Silhouette Slicing technique she pioneered Spring 2020.

It was in her new Pod that Seniz bleached her client Bria's hair to platinum blonde. A winning look according to Redken and Behind The Chair who awarded Seniz with second place.

Alkan says; "Bria has very fine and brittle Afro Caribbean hair but she was keen to undergo a drastic colour transformation. After our initial consultation we agreed that a platinum blonde would be the ultimate colour for her. To achieve this colour, I used Flashlift with Bonder + 20 Vol to enable me to leave the bleach on as long as I could without compromising the condition of her hair. This mixture meant I was able to lift all the undertones and unwanted colour and achieve the brightness necessary for a platinum blonde. We then proceeded to tone with 9B + 9V + 9P in equal amounts leaving the toner on for 15 minutes on dry hair. It’s important the toner is applied on dry hair for maximum absorption."

Curl Types deciphered

Curl Types deciphered

Identifying your curl shape and pattern is a vital component to learning how to look after your hair.

Did you know that there are four predominant curl types? The hair categories are 1, 2, 3 and 4, which are the curl patterns. 1 is straight, 2 is wavy, 3 is a curl and 4 is a coil patterned curl. There are then letters A, B, C which relate to the amount of frizz, A being the least frizzy and C the most. So, someone with straight but frizzy hair would be a 1C. It’s important to know that the frizzier the hair the less it absorbs moisture which is what will help determine the products you need to use for your hair type.

Identifying your hair type correctly will ensure you provide it with the adequate nourishment.

In this instance, curly hair requires different care to straighter hair types as it is more prone and sensitive to breakage. Due to the pattern that curly hair has it requires more hydration and nourishment as the natural oils stay predominantly on the top of the head. Natural oils are there to protect both scalp and hair but with curly hair, the oils struggle to reach mid lengths and ends, which is why we always advise people with curly hair to have regular in salon treatments to ensure hair stays healthy.

Coily hair types tend to be drier than a regular curl, which can then result in the hair being tangled more easily, which is why it’s important to detangle and elongate that type of hair.

So how to treat your hair according to your curl type?

3A - is a curl which is not very frizzy, generally easy to manage and needs hydration. Can be straightened with a round brush and will generally stay straight without humidity or water exposure. This type of hair is not overly susceptible to heat damage. The best style for this hair is to wear it in its natural form when the curls are defined with a serum, well-conditioned and also heat protected when heat is applied.

3B - 3B is not dissimilar to 3A - the curls are the same but there is a little more frizz, and might need more product to keep the hair hydrated such as Keracare thermal wonder collection to keep the hair straight and hydrated. This type of curl suits both defined curls and straighter styles using a round brush. I would finish off the style with a straightener to seal the moisture and keep the hair straight for longer.

3D - this hair can be styled straight and curly equally. It might need a pre -conditioner to hydrate the hair so that it is ready for thermal styling when wearing straight. ( such as Keracare thermal wonder collection). When worn curly - the hair might need support by wearing it in a twist (twisting the hair when damp (and applying define & curl by Keracare, and a leave in conditioner to hydrate and set the curl pattern), and then letting it out when dry) - this would help support the hair.

* for type 3 hair, we would suggest straightening with a round brush followed by a straightener to seal the cuticle straight.

4A - This is a zigzag hair pattern with minimal additional frizz; however, because the hair has high shrinkage, you would also want to apply moisture when elongating and styling the hair. Ideally one would wear this type of hair in its natural state - deep conditioning is always important - keeping the hair PH balance at a nice medium, rotating it between a hydrating and a protein treatment to keep the strength and moisture levels up.

4B - this hair is zig zag and coil patterned; but slightly more resistant (meaning it doesn’t absorb moisture as well). The easiest way to wear this hair is in its natural state, keeping it as hydrated as possible and this hair is in its best condition when minimising thermal styling.

4C - This hair type is zig zag and coil patterned; and frizzy. We want to retain moisture and the best way to do so it is by wearing it in a twisted form to lock in moisture. We recommend little thermal styling and bantu knots.

*for type 4 hair we would use a fork rake to straighten followed by a straightener.

Tips and tricks to help care for your curly hair

Wearing a silk Turban can help protect your hair from daily aggressors such as humidity, bad weather, and heat. Wearing your turban can also prevent frizzy hair.

Sleep on a Silk or bamboo pillowcase to reduce friction during the night. Excessive friction can create knots and damage to the hair in addition to unwanted frizz.

Wear a Silk scrunchie over any other kind as it is kinder to the hair and will not cause any breakage or damage to the hair cuticle.

Brush your hair before you wash it to detangle it as this will prevent breakage as brushing your hair in the shower actually damages it.

When in the shower wash your hair using a curly hair shampoo and a curl enhancing conditioner. We recommend combing the hair with a wide tooth comb whilst the conditioner is on. Make sure to rinse abundantly to ensure no product is left which could cause greasy hair.

I always recommend my clients use Redken one united multi-benefit treatment that delivers 25 benefits to improve manageability, protection and beauty. The spray works to reduce dryness and enhance the properties of other products for a nourished result.

October is ADHD awareness month

October is ADHD awareness month

Creative industries like ours are filled with incredibly different people, a melting pot of origins, religions and different brains. Being different was something that for many years was seen as a problem but is actually the future of our industry. Creativity comes with different mindsets hence why we’ve decided to celebrate October as ADHD month.

Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a condition that can cause above-normal levels of hyperactive and impulsive behaviours.

As a business, Neville, has noticed that more and more young people seem to be diagnosed with ADHD. “ADHD is a different way of processing information. If you find the way to communicate with ADHDers and support them whilst overcoming their challenges, you have created a pure artist. Studies shows many adults with ADHD end up as entrepreneurs. The trick for then is to find a career that suits them, one of the most common choices is hairdressing. In this way they are using their energy, creativity and other amazing strengths they have to get most out of the profession enriching it with their flare” says Elena Lavagni.

A variety of studies have shown that people with ADHD have super focus which means that if engaged correctly, people with ADHD can in fact accomplish a lot more and much faster. Lavagni adds, “ADHD is like having a Ferrari engine with bicycle breaks… once you strengthen the breaks you have a super power”.

We in the hairdressing industry could really benefit massively from the creativity, tenacity and empathy that comes with ADHD.

First and foremost, people with ADHD are very resourceful when it comes to problem solving. Whatever the issue they have the ability to connect the dots.

ADHDers' are extremely creative. They consistently come up with new ideas and whilst they might struggle to put those ideas into work, teamed with a business that can help them action their ideas can lead to incredible results.

Compassion is another beautiful trait and quality that ADHDers’ are plentiful. “No team can be strong and united without compassion as it is the foundation of team work” adds Lavagni.

People with ADHD need to work twice as hard to achieve, making them extremely perseverant. Perseverance is the key to success and in our industry, we need more people that are willing to work hard to unleash their maximum potential.

They are also astute! Being observers means that they will be more receptive to client’s need.

Finally, as if you weren’t sold that ADHD is a super power, ADHDers’ have a real appreciation for life. Having gone through hardship they radiate energy and who wouldn’t that in their business?!
